Gerrard pays tribute to Chelsea start
Liverpool and England captain Steven Gerrard has paid tribute to Chelsea legend Frank Lampard as he prepares to play his 100th game for England.
Lampard will join Gerrard as one of the few players to play 100 times for England, joining the likes of Peter Shilton and David Beckham, if he plays against Ukraine tomorrow.
Despite the constant remarks that the pair cannot play together in the same team, perhaps that time has passed.
Gerrard
Gerrard was full of praise for a player who has been a close rival and team-mate for many years, in an interview with the Mirror.
“Frank deserves all the accolades that he get,” Gerrard said. “For me, it is always nice when we are in the same team.
“A lot of people talk about me and Frank being in the same team. We enjoy playing together.
“Frank has been tremendous for club and country.
“No one deserves this 100 caps more than him.
“Hopefully, I will be on the pitch when he gets that 100th cap because I have been with him all the way through.
“He is a good friend.”
LA Galaxy
Gerrard added: “Roy Hodgson said last year when there was talk of him going to LA Galaxy that he wouldn’t play for England if he went there. He is too good for Galaxy.
“He made the right choice, of course he did. You saw his form at the back end of last season.
“I would have supported his decision if he had gone, but, for me, he still had so much to offer the Premier League and England.
“Frank is a great player and has been for club and country for a very long time.”
Clearly, despite the jokes, Gerrard and Lampard are full of admiration for each other.
And their presence in midfield tomorrow, alongside the more youthful Jack Wilshere, could be crucial as England look to cement their top spot in the World Cup qualifying group.
A defeat could be disastrous and send the Three Lions spiralling towards a play-off date with a side like France, so a positive result against Ukraine could be pivotal.
