Former Manchester United goalkeeping coach Eric Steele is calling for patience with under-fire manager David Moyes.
The champions have endured a disastrous start to the season - languishing in the lower half of the league following three defeats in their last four Premier League games.
Saturday's shock 2-1 loss to West Brom at a deflated Old Trafford sparked fresh concerns over Moyes' efforts since taking over from Sir Alex Ferguson in the summer but Steele, who also departed in May, says time will be the healer.

Gerrard: "To take risks on unknown young players is difficult.

Steven Gerrard says the increasing number of overseas stars competing in the Premier League is making it extremely difficult for young players to get first-team opportunities at leading clubs.
And he stressed that the pressure faced by managers means they are unlikely to give young talent a chance to gain experience at the top level.
The Liverpool skipper told the BBC: "Managers are only ever eight to 10 days away from the sack.
"So to take risks on unknown young players is difficult.
"At Liverpool, (manager) Brendan Rodgers has been fantastic because he's been brave and he's given young players a chance.

[MAFIA]: Di Canio vows to return back!

The Italian has ended his silence since his sacking at the Stadium of Light by insisting he will "take something positive" from his tumultuous 13-game spell in charge.
And he dismissed reports that a training ground bust-up were responsible for his dismissal, claiming players sent messages of support in the wake of his exit.
In a statement issued to the Press Association, Di Canio said: "I remain confident in my ability and I want to manage again in England as soon as I can.
"When things like this happen it is important to take something positive from it. I have learnt a lot from my brief time at Sunderlandand I am sure that this will only make me a better manager in my next job.
"Even though my time at the club ended prematurely, I would like to thank Sunderland for giving me my first opportunity to be a Premier League manager."
Di Canio was axed after the Black Cats' 3-0 defeat at West Brom, having reportedly alienated some senior players by singling them out for criticism.
But Di Canio described reports that a delegation of senior players had demanded his exit as "wholly untrue".
Di Canio added: "There was no training ground bust-up as some are reporting and many of the players have since sent me messages thanking me for my time as their manager and helping them improve as footballers."
Di Canio replaced Martin O'Neill at the end of March and was credited with saving the club from relegation after inspiring a famous 3-0 win at north east rivals Newcastle in only his second match in charge.

Lukas Podolski may have been the first Arsenal player to post a celebratory dressing room picture after the glorious win over Napoli, but the German had the advantage that he didn’t play at the Emirates last night.
Mikel Arteta was the next to upload a picture on Twitter from inside the Arsenal dressing room, also with Santi Cazorla, Mesut Ozil Podolski, Per Mertesacker and Olivier Giroud.
The French striker then added an Instagram picture featuring the two Arsenal goal scorers against Napoli, with man of the moment Ozil.

Japanese star Shinji Kagawa has admitted that he needs to improve if he wants to stay at Manchester United.
The 24-year-old playmaker joined United from Borussia Dortmund but he has yet to cement a starting place at Old Trafford.
On Saturday he made his first league start under David Moyes but the midfielder was hauled off at half-time in the 2-1 defeat to West Brom.
And Kagawa - who was the subject of interest from former club Dortmund over the summer - admits things have to get better.

Chelsea boss José Mourinho delivers Eden Hazard injury update

Eden Hazard is unlikely to be available for Chelsea’s trip toNorwich City this weekend, José Mourinho has revealed.

The Belgium international has been left out of the Blues’ squad for Tuesday’s Champions League clash at Steaua Bucharest after picking up an ankle problem in Saturday’s 1-1 draw at Tottenham.
And Mourinho confirmed that the 21-year-old is a major injury doubt ahead of Sunday’s trip to Carrow Road.
“Eden I don’t think will be fit for Sunday,” said Mourinho.
“I think he will be fit after the international break but Dr [Paco] Biosca is always optimistic and says there is a little chance he can be fit for Sunday [when Chelsea visit Norwich].”
Hazard, who was substituted in the 69th minute at White Hart Lane, has started all six of Chelsea’s Premier League games this season.

Steaua Bucharest v Chelsea: Pre-match facts

Steaua are the only Romanian club to have triumphed in Europe, winning the European Champion Clubs’ Cup in 1985-86 by defeating Barcelona in a penalty shoot-out.
• Steaua have conceded 346 goals in Uefa competition.
• Ramires returns from a one-game ban following his red card in the Uefa Super Cup loss to Bayern Munich.
• Chelsea have 11 points from six games this season, as they had in September 2007 when José Mourinho’s first spell at Stamford Bridge ended.

Pellegrini on Champions League Clash: "I am sure we will see a very high performance tomorrow.”

Posted on:

Manuel Pellegrini’s record against Pep Guardiola is a sorry one but he gets another chance to finally put one over his tormentor when Manchester City host holders Bayern Munich in the Champions League on Wednesday.
During his time in La Liga the Chilean was in the opposing dugout to former Barcelona coach Guardiola on eight occasions and only avoided defeat once when his Villarreal side drew 3-3 in the Nou Camp in the 2008-09 season.
His brief stay at Real Madrid included two El Classico defeats by Guardiola’s Barca and the trend continued at Malaga where he soaked up another four losses against the Catalans.
The furniture has been re-arranged in European soccer, however, and Pellegrini will feel his expensively-assembled Man City side will start as equals to Bayern who have yet to really spark under Guardiola even if they are unbeaten.
Pellegrini was head-hunted by City at the end of last season partly because of his tactical nous in the Champions League in which he had Villarreal and Malaga punching above their weight.
He has never failed to survive the group stage in his previous Champions League campaigns and City’s opening day 3-0 win away to Viktoria Plzen has raised hopes that they can finally make their mark on the competition having twice fallen short of the knockout rounds.
Despite that emphatic victory in the Czech Republic Pellegrini’s opening weeks in charge of City have been far from smooth with two defeats in their opening six Premier League games, the latest a 3-2 loss at Aston Villa on Saturday.
Pellegrini was baffled by his side’s loss at Villa, having dominated for long spells, but said it would have no adverse effect on morale ahead of a visit from the European champions.
City will be boosted by the return of midfielder David Silva who has been out since the end of August.
The Spain international has missed five games since suffering a thigh injury on international duty. Striker Sergio Aguero, not risked on Saturday due to a minor knock, is also likely to feature in the glamour Group D clash at the Etihad Stadium.
Pellegrini said: “David is in the squad. I think he can at least play some minutes. Sergio is fit and he is also on the list.”
Pellegrini wants his players to respond after their disappointment at Villa Park, where they surrendered a 2-1 lead to lose 3-2. The result ended a run of three successive wins in which City had scored 12 goals and started to look like the serious force they aspire to be.
Pellegrini added: “Of course, I always expect a big response from the players.
“We respect the Champions League very well and it is very important for us to continue against the most difficult team in the group.
“I am sure we will see a very high performance tomorrow.”
Guardiola’s start at treble-winning Bayern has been efficient rather than spectacular with Saturday’s 1-0 win at home to VfL Wolfsburg indicative of their form so far.
“It is very difficult at this moment to improve with Bayern because they won the last three competitions but he will find a way because he is a very good manager,” Pellegrini, who does not have that dilemma at City, said.
Bayern began the defence of their European crown with a 3-0 home win against CSKA Moscow and there are already signs that the Bundesliga giants are playing a more intricate, possession-based game than under the more direct Jupp Heynkes.
Against CSKA Bayern completed 753 passes, more than any other team in the opening group games, and Bayern are unlikely to change that blueprint throughout the campaign, even if Guardiola admits his side have room for improvement.
“We need to do some things better even though we won against Wolfsburg,” Guardiola, who won 14 trophies in four seasons in charge of Barcelona, told reporters. “I am certain we will put in a good performance against Manchester.”
Bayern lost to City two years ago when they had already qualified for the last 16 and defender Jerome Boateng, formerly of City, believes under Pellegrini the Premier League side can be even more of a threat in Europe.
“I think so they are stronger, new coach, changes in tactics. They play even better together now. Not like two years ago. They are more of a team,” he said.

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard admits to Luis Suarez fears

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has admitted he feared star striker Luis Suarez would leave Anfield over the summer.
The Uruguayan international returned from a 10-match ban for biting Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic in the Capital One Cup defeat to rivals Manchester United before scoring twice in Sunday's 3-1 win over Sunderland in the Premier League.
But it looked as though the striker would be leaving the club during the transfer window, with Real Madrid linked with him before Arsenal put in an offer of £40million and one pound in the hope of triggering a release clause.
Suarez remained at Liverpool, though, and Gerrard admits he is delighted by his team-mate's decision to stay, as well as his positive attitude since committing to Brendan Rodgers' side.

Premier League Preview

It will be a case of master versus apprentice when Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur lock horns on Saturday lunchtime, while Sunderland continue life post-Paolo Di Canio on home soil against Liverpool.
Swansea City and Arsenal should put on a show to satisfy the purists on Saturday Night Football, while there will be a tale of two cities in the opening encounter of a Super Sunday double-header as Stoke play host to Norwich.
The Premier League weekend kicks off at White Hart Lane, with Tottenham Hotspur's home date with Chelsea expected to see as many eyes fall on the respective dugouts as events unfolding on the field. Spurs boss Andre Villas-Boas learnt his coaching trade under the watchful eye of Jose Mourinho, but is now very much his own man and will want to show the self-proclaimed 'Special One' that he took plenty from the time spent as his go-to scout. Spurs' record against the Blues is not the best, to put it mildly - winning just three of 42 Premier League meetings - but they have opened the season in impressive style and boast the meanest defence in the top flight. Chelsea have also kept things tight at the back, conceding only twice, but both sides have struggled at the opposite end of the field and will want to address those issues on derby day.

Mata: "I think Jose can help me"

Juan Mata believes Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho will make him a better player.
Mata's omission from Mourinho's preferred starting XI has been one of the biggest talking points of the new Premier League season.
The Spaniard has been outstanding for the Blues in the past two seasons, but Mourinho has openly stated that he prefers Brazilian Oscar as his No 10.
Mourinho says the 25-year-old must adapt with his style, work on his defensive play and become more consistent.
And Mata has vowed to do whatever it takes.

Pascoe on Suarez: 'We've welcomed back world-class talent'

Pascoe insists the Uruguayan's presence in the 1-0 defeat to Manchester United midweek has already given the squad at Melwood a significant boost.
And Rodgers' right-hand man also reserved special praise for Daniel Sturridge, who lead the line impeccably throughout Suarez's absence.
"Straightaway we've got a world-class striker coming back in," Pascoe told Liverpoolfc.com.
"He's a great lad and he's very committed to the team and to Liverpool. The way Luis plays, he'll create chances and I'm sure that he'll score many goals.
"His return has given us a boost at Melwood. He has of course been around and he's been training over the last few months.

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers believes the return to action of Luis Suarez will help Danny Sturridge

Suarez returned from a 10-match ban in Wednesday's Capital One Cup defeat at Manchester United in midweek.
Rodgers is expected to call upon Suarez's services again when Liverpool travel to Sunderland in the Premier League on Sunday, and he hopes the chemistry between the Uruguayan and Sturridge will get better as the season progresses.
"I think it will only improve him (Sturridge) and make him a better player. Good players want to play with other good players," said Rodgers.
"I think you will see with how they will perform together that they can be a real threat.
"It is not something that Daniel or anyone else will be worried about. Their focus is on the team.
"It is my job to manage the dynamics and the structure of the team.

Sone Aluko is confident Hull City can steer clear of relegation trouble and preserve their Premier League status.
The Tigers have made a solid start to life back among the top flight elite, collecting seven points from their opening five fixtures - as many as reigning champions Manchester United.
They secured a second success of the season on Saturday as they edged an entertaining encounter with Newcastle United 3-2.
Aluko grabbed the winner at St James' Park, converting a spectacular volley, and the highly-rated forward is adamant that Hull can maintain their early momentum and avoid being dragged into a basement battle.

Wenger commends Ozil impact at Arsenal

Arsene Wenger admits Mesut Ozil's deadline day arrival at Arsenal has given 'a lift to everyone at the club'.
The Gunners left it late to complete their most important piece of summer transfer business, with Ozil lured away from Real Madrid in a £40million-plus deal.
Securing the signature of one of European football's most creative talents was seen as a major coup for Wenger, who had previously been criticised for his reluctance to spend big on world-class performers.
Arsenal knew exactly what they were getting in Ozil, with there few who doubted his ability to slip seamlessly into the Premier League fold.

[FIRED]: Sunderland sacks Paolo Di Canio as manager

Sunderland has announced that head coach Paolo di Canio was fired on Sunday evening after just six months on the job.

Sunderland are currently bottom of the table and the team hasn’t managed to bag win from the first five games of the new season.
Along with this poor start, Paolo di Canio wasn’t getting on well with the players as of late and he locked horns with a few of them in a training ground meeting following the team’s 3-0 defeat at West Bromwich Albion on Saturday. So for many Sunderland fans, the news that di Canio has been sacked was inevitable (this guy certainly saw it coming).
Here’s what the club had to say on the Sunderland website: “Sunderland AFC confirms that it has parted company with head coach Paolo Di Canio this evening.

[Match Report]: Arsenal go top of Premiership table with win over Stoke

Arsenal 3 Stoke 1
Victory left the Gunners two points in front of both Chelsea and Liverpool, though north London rivals Tottenham Hotspur will join them on 12 points if they win away to Cardiff later on Sunday.Arsenal went to the top of the English Premier League table after a 3-1 victory at home to Stoke on Sunday.
Wales midfielder Aaron Ramsey, who suffered a potentially career-threatening leg injury following a poor tackle by Stoke’s Ryan Shawcross three years ago, made it seven goals in eight games when he gave Arsenal a fifth-minute lead at the Emirates Stadium with a close-range strike after Potters goalkeeper Asmir Begovic had palmed away a Mesut Ozil free-kick.
Stoke, however, were back on level terms when United States international Geoff Cameron scored his first goal for the club in the 26th minute with a controlled shot from the edge of the box after Marko Arnautovic’s volley had come back off the post.
Arsenal though were 2-1 up before half-time through centre-back Per Mertesacker’s looping header.
Bacary Sagna then scored his first goal in 19 months as Arsenal again made Stoke pay for failing to defend a set-piece when he headed home in the 72nd minute from another free-kick by STG42.4 million ($A72.48 million) club record signing Ozil, the Germany international producing a sparkling display on his Gunners’ home debut.
In Sunday’s other early kick-off match, Swansea won 2-0 away to Crystal Palace with Michu putting the Welsh club in front in just the second minute before Nathan Dyer added a second goal shortly after half-time.

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers admits his side never got going after seeing their unbeaten record ended by Southampton at Anfield.
Dejan Lovren's second-half header earned Southampton a famous 1-0 victory to condemn Liverpool to their first defeat of the campaign.
Rodgers had no complaints with the result, conceding Liverpool struggled to impose themselves during the 90 minutes against a well-organised Southampton.
"I just thought we never got going really," Rodgers told Sky Sports. "I thought in terms of our tempo and technically we were nowhere near the level we have been at and it is obviously very, very disappointing having not lost for quite a long time in the league, I think it was March and funnily enough against Southampton.
"We have been on a real tremendous run but today, from the first whistle, we never really got going and we suffered from that."

[Preview]: Chelsea Vs Fulham | Any hope for Mourinho?

Chelsea Vs Fulham

September 21, 2013 5.30pm (UK)

Stamford Bridge — London

Referee: A. Marriner

Chelsea have not had the best start to the season so far with Jose Mourinho’s men failing to win two on two consecutive games. Things got pretty aggravated by their shock 2-1 loss to FC Basel in the Champions League match midweek, a defeat which certainly ringed a few alarm bells. Thus, they would definitely want to get back to winning ways when they take on Fulham at their home ground on Saturday. Given Mourinho’s home record the Blues fans will be looking forward to a win nonetheless.

[Preview]: Liverpool vs. Southampton | 5 players on the radar

Liverpool look to continue their good start to the season as they welcome Southampton to Anfield
Last season 1-0
Odds Liverpool 8/13, Draw 10/3, Southampton 13/2
Liverpool might be without a 100% record but they are still the early season pace setters with 10 points from 12 as they sit at the top of the table. Southampton are the visitors to Anfield who have shown a degree of promise in their opening four matches and probably feel they should have more points, especially after their game against West Ham last weekend. They’re solidly in mid-table on five points.
On the injury front Liverpool are without Phillipe Coutinho who sustained a shoulder injury against Swansea and will be out until the end of October, whilst Glen Johnson and Aly Cissokho are continuing their recovery from injuries. There are still question marks over the fitness of Daniel Agger who missed Liverpool's 2-2 draw with Swansea on Monday night, whilst Southampton may be without left-back Luke Shaw as he was substituted late on against West Ham.

Sir Alex says he never had influence over referees during his career

Sir Alex Ferguson has denied suggestions he may have had influence over referees during his decorated career.
Comments from former official Mark Halsey this week, in which he referred to having a "good relationship" with the Scot, led to claims Ferguson may have had undue influence during his long stay in charge of Manchester United.
Ferguson denied any wrongdoing, though, and said the extent of his relationship with Halsey had been to support him during his battle with cancer.
"I can't believe...obviously there is an Alex Ferguson element in his book, he thought was important," the former United manager told MUTV.
